Thank you for sharing with us your love of the rails. I never met James but his videos and daily updates brought me a lot of happiness. Everytime my e-mail pinged I hoped that it was a new video or update on how things were going.
Everytime I hear one of the songs he played I am instantly reminded of his great musical talent. I also wanted to send my condolences to James' family and friends. Being one of James' YouTube audience, I felt as though he was a friend.
Thank you for the times you shared with us. My heartfelt condolences to friends and family. Ride in peace. Semper fi! I only knew James through his work on YouTube sorry about his passing his work will definitely be missed you can tell through his videos that he was a caring and compassionate individual which the world needs more of God bless him God bless his family.
To me James or 'Stobe' although i never met him is a great inspiration to live the life that you want to be living even if it means losing it. He will be missed.. My thoughts go out to his family and close ones.. Rest in peace brother.. Really, really tough, heavy loss.
Very gut wrenching when I heard the news. I watched all of Stobe's videos many, many times. They helped me deal with stress, remember my good times out there, and get through some tough days. I'd wait with anticipation for a new video. Times when I was stranded, got off in the wrong place, missed rides, or had to hitch hike through some crappy town, I thought about Stobe and how he always made it through similar situations.
Jim thank you for all of the beautiful work. All that wandering around in the dark throughout the country, filming. Thank you for sharing concern, experience, wisdom, information on routes, how-to identification info, know how, etc. I feel like I learned a lot from you. Thank you for taking the time to exchange a couple emails with me. Great sense of humor, humorous sarcasm and criticism. Washing your clothes in a cardboard box, taking a bath at the cemetery spigot, licking frost off rocks in the desert, finding a cargo of hot metal coils and dumping your ravioli on them to warm it up!
You made it look like it was so easy to just go wherever you wanted, both in the darkest hours of the night or in the bright sunshine. Feels like I lost a good friend, even though we never met. You will always be an inspiration and in my memories - whenever I go, wherever I might end up. Thank you, lots of love, will miss you a lot. Deepest condolences to Jim's family. Only knew him through his videos and our emails and texts to each other. Wish we could have met up when he was supposed to pass through NYC.
Sincere empathy to the family. I came across Stobes videos earlier this year and was captivated right away as I have always had an interest in freight trains. Jim was very informative in his videos and would give us a history of some of the places he visited.
Jim was able to give us a view of our beautiful country that we wouldn't otherwise be able to see. Even though I never met Jim, I feel like I have lost a friend.
My heart goes out to his family and friends during this time and I pray that the Lord Jesus will comfort you. I always checked YouTube every couple of days to see if there was a new video from Jim. When I heard of his passing it was like a part of me had been removed.
I always appreciated his comments about the trains he was riding and the places he visited. I was proud to have supported him financially on his journeys and I hope his family is comforted by the many expressions of sympathy from his fans across the world. Everyone should try catching out once in a lifetime. Live the dream like Stobe did.
Ride a moonlit night in his memory.
If you want the addiction, get a moniker and ride again. James Stobie leaves behind an amazing legacy. He is a modern American folk hero, travelling the countryside freely in the tradition of hobos who came before him, and sharing a realistic, gritty, and often humorous view of America that few get to see.
I cried when I found out Stobe the Hobo had passed. Wandering, courageous adventurers are rare these days. He was an amazing soul, and that shined through his art. To his family and close friends, my sincerest condolences. This guy was amazing. I loved his personality and his videos. I never got to meet him in person, but he's the type of guy that I'd love to meet. Very down to earth and he told things like they were. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts, through us, they live on.
My condolences. I'm from Belgium, Europe.

Yes even here we knew "Stobe the Hobo. It flows through all of us. This song helped me during a difficult time. The lyrics are moving and have a great relevance to this tragic situation and the very end of the piece is just another of life's coincidences meant to make us believe we will all meet again. Rail on Jim, rest in peace, we are praying for that day we "catch" together once again. Jim was one of the constants in life. His warm voice, quick wit, and great sense of humor touched and impacted many of us.
I lived vicariously through Stobe and his adventures and will miss him so much. Another good man gone too soon. RIP buddy! I loved Jim's work, nobody did it like him. Jim's videos and his take on the world gave me peace and solace during the most difficult time of my life. I'm heartsick to learn of his passing.
The world, and certainly my world, is a lesser place without him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I subscribed to several of his videos and sent him a first aid kit and some extra batteries to the address he used in Montana. It has probably been Months since i last communicated with him. We were not great friends He seemed a rather talented person, both musically and philosophically. He would have been awesome with a Teaching Credential and a Position at one of our countries very fine "Local Colleges".
He had A LOT to offer young students and society in general. It is a shame he is gone. I have no doubts that great things were in his future. I hope that his Family can now claim ownership of them. They are a unique treasure. I would contact Anybody and Everybody for support with that endeavor You son's Life is a gift, waiting to be given to The World.
Allow them to watch his unique life style, as Jim presented it in all of his Special Videos.
